Review – and here’s what I had to say about it!
Mark, the lead star of a TV detective series has two inconvenient habits: he keeps falling over murdered coworkers, and he can’t stop himself wise-cracking with — and lusting over — the real detective investigating the murders, Lt Reese Franco. To say he’s dazzled by Reese is a bit of an understatement. I’ll admit to a couple of moments of wanting to reach into the text to give Mark a shake and remind him that he’s the one finding all these corpses, and he’s the one being deliberately put into the frame for murder. Now is not the time to be rhapsodising over Reese’s… er, finer attributes, shall we call them? Then Mark will say something wicked, and I’ll laugh again, and the story moves on to another situation, another source of conflict and motive pops up (the book has plenty of red herrings to keep the little grey cells well occupied), and there’s another character who’s either a suspicious lot or just downright unpleasant. Of course, as the corpses pile up, Mark decides to take on his screen persona and investigate for himself, and the plot races on to a very satisfying conclusion.
This is a fast-paced book, sharp and funny, with a pov protagonist with a wicked sense of humour. I snorted with amusement at more than one line. Despite the murderous theme, this is essentially a light and rather happy book with the sort of ending that almost assures you that there will be more to come as the TV and the real detectives face the future. Nicely done, and a good read.
